The Actors' Chapel Choir
Stephen Fraser, Director
One of the dynamic ministries at Saint Malachy’s, the Choir is comprised of volunteer singers with various backgrounds and musical experience. It is open to anyone with a passion for singing and a desire to learn excellent choral music. Its repertoire consists of a rich selection of choral polyphonic choral anthems, Gregorian Chant (sung in the original neumes) and harmonized (“Anglican”) Chant.
Under the direction of Stephen Fraser, Director of Music & Organist, the choir sings at the 11 AM Mass every Sunday from September through May. It is also a major part of the Christmas and Holy Week liturgies. The weekly choir rehearsals are Thursday evenings 6:30 - 8:15 PM, and the choir also meets on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM prior to the 11:00 AM Mass. Members have the opportunity to serve as cantors at the other weekend masses.
Besides adding beautiful music to the weekly liturgies, the Choir regularly presents special musical programs. The all-volunteer choir is one of the finest in Manhattan and has also participated in concert events at Carnegie Hall, a memorial concert for the community of Newtown, CT, The Beacon Theatre, Choral Evensong at St. Mary the Virgin (Times Square) and the General Assembly Prayer Service of the United Nations (2014).
