As a Christian devotion, the Stations of the Cross date back to the Twelfth Century, when political turmoil in the Holy Land prevented pilgrims from visiting the actual sites depicted in the stations. By the Seventeenth Century, they had become commonplace in most Catholic churches.
Just as our ancestors in faith found a way to pivot their devotion to Christ's journey to the cross, we invite those who are still wary of coming into the physical church building to join in this devotion via a video by Bishop Robert Barron.
